What Are the Odds? – What is a good SAT score?

Scores for each of the SAT’s three sections (Critical Reading, Math and Writing) range from 200 to 800 so a perfect score is 2400. The average score for each section is usually around 500. This means the total average score is generally around 1500. (NOTE: In 2013, 1.66 million students took the test. The average scores in each section were 496 in critical reading; 514 for math; and 488 points for the writing section.)

Remember – very few students manage to get a perfect 2400 score. Even those at the best colleges in the country. Most important – RELAX! You can do this!   When you check out scores at various schools, you’ll see that some of the schools report only the critical reading and math scores and disregard the writing scores. This is because, when the writing section of the exam was introduced in 2005, it was not popular at some schools and many of those schools do not use it as part of their admissions criteria. In 2016, a re-designed version of the SAT will be introduced and the writing section will no longer be required as part of the admissions test.
