Between computers, tablets, and smartphones, kids today have an endless supply of knowledge at their fingertips. But even with these new devices and tools, many children don’t grow up learning the same skills as their elders. Here are some things every child should learn how to do.

How to Write a Letter

Sure, most people don’t need to write letters to get by in today’s world. But this old-fashioned skill is something that should never be lost to time. Getting a handwritten letter in the mail will always beat a text or email. Have your kids write thank-you notes whenever they receive a gift and encourage them to write letters to relatives. You can even help them get acquainted with a pen pal from another country and incorporate their conversations into a homeschool geography lesson.

How to Sew

You don’t need a fancy sewing machine and unlimited time to teach your kids the basics of sewing. A needle and thread are all you need to show them how to repair a tear in a shirt instead of buying a new one. Replacing a button is another sewing skill that will come in handy later in life. Not only will sewing potentially save them money in the future, it also teaches your kids that things can be fixed instead of thrown away.

How to Plan a Healthy Meal

It’s so important for kids to learn how to cook. One of the benefits of being a homeschool parent is that you can add cooking into your curriculum. Specifically, teach your kids how to plan and cook a healthy meal. There are thousands of ways to do this, but a well-balanced meal should consist of a protein source, healthy carbohydrates, and lots of vegetables. Help your child plan one meal per week that the whole family can enjoy. Take them grocery shopping with you and then help them prepare the meal. Being involved will make them more interested in the process and more likely to retain the information.
