You’ve had those days. The baby is crying. You have five unread emails from work. The dog has been itching all day. It’s 3:00 and all you’ve eaten is a granola bar. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and feel like you can’t keep up with your homeschool duties, try the tips below.
Take Things One Step At a Time
On days that you’re barely keeping your head above water, shift your focus from the full to-do list to one thing at a time. Prioritize what needs to be done and let everything sit on the backburner for a while. The kids have to be picked up from soccer practice but everyone will be fine if today’s math lesson gets pushed to tomorrow.
Take a Moment to Yourself
This may feel impossible when you’re completely overwhelmed, but don’t underestimate the power of a few minutes of peace. Close the bedroom door and take deep breathes for a full minute. Do it while you’re going to the bathroom if that’s all the time you can get. A few moments of clarity can help you reset your mind and feel more prepared to conquer the rest of the day.
Have Some Fun
Sometimes the best way to release stress is to goof off for a little while. Have your children look up some funny jokes online or share their favorite cat videos. Throw on some upbeat music and host a five-minute dance party. Doing something silly will put a smile on your face and release some of the steam that’s been building up inside you.
Be Honest With Your Kids
If your children are old enough to be alone for an hour or two, explain to them how you’re feeling. Ask if they can occupy themselves for a little while so you can catch up on your long list of things to do. If they can’t be left alone, tell them that you have a lot going on and ask if they can be extra patient with you today.
Get Support From Other Homeschool Parents
There are plenty of homeschool parents who have been in the same position as you.
Don’t be shy about asking for support from other homeschool parents in your network. They’ll most likely be glad to help, especially if you’re willing to return the favor on another day. See if your kids can join another family on a field trip or just for an afternoon of lessons. You can also use this as a chance to get advice from other parents’ homeschool schedules and see what tips they have for staying organized.
