As a society we are rather obsessed with “firsts.”  We take note and admire someone who was the first to do something.  The first president, the first person on the moon, the first woman supreme court justice, the first black president, the first to swim the English channel, the first person to sail around the world – we revel in these.  We might even wish we could have been there to experience them firsthand.

They are moments never to be repeated, history in the making.

As parents we treasure “firsts.” From the first time our sweet baby rolled over to that first loose tooth to the first day of high school, we relish, photograph, and never forget these milestones.  And we want to experience as many of those “firsts” with our child as we can.  That is a great perk of homeschooling – being a part so many “firsts” in learning.  Hearing these recounted in a “What did you do in school today?” conversation can’t hold a candle to being right there, being a part of those “firsts.”  The first word read, the first “Aha!” of addition, the first time he started to love history, the first time she was intrigued by a science experiment.

After all they are moments never to be repeated, our child in the making.
