There is much to be said (and has been said!) about the big picture of homeschooling – the reasons why people choose to homeschool, the benefits, the successes, etc. etc. etc. Getting the big picture is great! Super helpful. But sometimes it’s good to take a step closer, to focus in on the very essence of homeschool at its molecular level. I’m going to bring out the microscope and talk to just one homeschooler!
Meet Adara Huls. She is an expressive, articulate sixth grade student who is a super reader and always brightens everyone’s day. She is a favorite of both adults and children alike. I asked her these questions while she was visiting us:
How long have you been homeschooled, Adara?
I’ve been homeschooled since kindergarten.
And who is your homeschool teacher?
It’s both of my parents – my mom and my dad.
What do you like about being homeschooled?
I think it’s a lot better than going to public school because I don’t have to deal with drama [the way kids treat each other] and bullies.
What kind of experiences have you had as a homeschool student?
A lot of different things like writing clubs and horseback riding. Oh, and piano lessons and art classes. Oh, and theater. [Adara was in homeschool theater production of Beauty and the Beast]
If you have children someday, would you homeschool them?
That I don’t know the answer to yet.
What has been the most important thing you’ve learned so far?
Math because it’s everywhere and everyone needs it.
Have you ever been part of a homeschool co-op?
Yes, but I didn’t like it much. It was too much what I think school would be like. There were cliques. The classes were nice, but I just didn’t like the way it was with the students. The writing club homeschool group at the library was fun, though.
What do you look forward to this homeschool year?
I’m hoping that my dad will teach me more about Greek mythology.
If you could not homeschool, what would you miss most about it?
I think I would miss being right with my family.
So there you have it! One tiny glimpse into what makes homeschool the growing trend that it is – individual students learning with those they love.
