globeA friend of mine recently walked into “One Price Dry Cleaning” with a couple of dresses and suit jackets. She asked how much it would be per item, to which the lady responded: “It depends on the piece…”

“One Price Dry Cleaning” means each piece is the same price, right??  Wrong!!

You park on a parkway, right?? Wrong!!

“Homeschooling” means you go to school at home, right??  Wrong!!

Well then, where do homeschoolers go to school, you ask?

In the Community

Many homeschoolers spend time each week at various venues.  They might take music lessons, visit a museum, be in a drama group, take in a program at the library, or serve at a soup kitchen.  With the flexibility afforded by “home”school, the entire community becomes a place to learn.

At Co-ops

More and more “home”school families are coming together to form co-ops.   Some co-ops share teaching responsibilities and some attend outings together.  Whether meeting once a week or once a month, parents and students find co-ops a great benefit to their educational journeys.

In Cyber Space

Online learning is a growing part of “home”school.  Internet resources take the student beyond the four walls of the house and bring the world to their fingertips!  Parents choose web-based learning programs because they are cost-effective (fewer consumables) and successful.  Global Student Network is a great example in this regard.  At www.globalstudentnetwork.com, parents and students can find 6 of the best curricula available, true customer service, and a virtual learning academy (International Virtual Learning Academy) if a more structured, teacher-supported experience is sought.

So what would be a more accurate name for this fast-growing educational trend?  How about “Real-life Education Equipping Life-long Learners.”   Accurate, but too much of a mouthful!

Perhaps” “home-based”school?  A little better, but still doesn’t roll off the tongue.

I guess if “home” is anywhere you are surrounded by people you care about, doing the things you like to do together, striving to reach your goals and dreams, then maybe “home”school isn’t such a misnomer after all.
