Great! Summer is a good time to earn some extra money and get experience in the working world. Here are some things you need to know:
Work Permit
In order to work at a business, you need a work permit (jobs for individuals like babysitting or lawn work does not require a work permit). This show that you are old enough to work (age 14) and basically gives the business permission to hire you. You can get a work permit (also called “working papers”) from your local high school.
Wait! I’m homeschooled! What do I do???
Homeschool students go to the local high school for work permits also. Call the school and ask who issues work permits, set up a time to see that person, explain you are homeschooled, and voila! You will be ready to rake in the cash!
But I go to school online! Shouldn’t they give me a work permit?
Well, no. As awesome as your online school or curriculum are, they cannot issue a work permit. It has to be issued from the local high school.
Interview
Whether or not you have an actual interview or are just meeting your employer for the first time, here are some important things to remember.
- Shake their hand firmly. This may seem “old fashioned,” but it is still the acceptable way to greet someone. If they don’t offer their hand, go ahead and offer yours.
- Always make eye contact. This says a lot about you – that you are confident and ready to work with people.
- No electronics! Turn off your phone and do not listen to your ipod, not even while you are waiting to talk to someone. Not being connected to anything says you are ready to get down to business.
- Be on time.
- Be honest. You are new to the working world – it’s OK not to know everything or know how to do everything. It’s never OK to lie.
On the Job
You’ve landed that job – SUPER! Now it’s time to roll up those sleeves and get to work! This means:
- Always being on time.
- Always try your best.
- Unless you’re told otherwise, assume electronics (phones, ipods, ipads) are not for working time.
- When interacting with people, always be polite and respectful no matter who they are or how old they are.
- Never be afraid to ask questions.
Soon you’ll be earning that first pay check, but don’t settle just for a pay check! The sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when you have worked hard and given it your best effort is the best pay you can ever receive.
