plug-outlet_300Robert loved Tuesdays.  Mondays were OK because it was chess lessons and Fridays were fun because Mom always planned some kind of outing, but the homeschool co-op that met at church on Tuesdays made that his favorite day.  The science lessons taught by Josh’s mom usually involved an experiment (cool!) and he loved sharing his writing with their Creative Writer’s Circle.  Mom liked co-op too.  She taught an American history class on Tuesdays and she liked chatting with the other moms while the kids played outside after their “classes” were over.

As homeschooling grows in the U.S., homeschool co-ops are becoming more prevalent.  Although these groups may vary in frequency and purpose, they all serve to enhance and support homeschooling.   Some groups gather for mainly social purposes, while others have a more instructional bent with parents teaching various classes.   Most co-ops are combination of the two – social and instructional.

Now there is an opportunity for homeschool co-ops to offer even more.  Co-ops can choose to organize as a Virtual Learning Academy through Global Student Network.  Becoming a VLA offers many benefits:

Price break on curriculum.  Because a VLA is recognized as a “school,” co-ops embracing this option can receive curriculum at discount pricing.  Global Student Network has 6 of the best curricula to choose from including secular, Christian, honors and AP courses.  All the curricula are web-based, highly interactive, effective, and individualized for all learning styles.

Added support and structure.  Organizing as a VLA can offer academic guidance and accountability as needed.  Even access to teachers is a possibility with a VLA.  You even receive a free website base for your VLA.

Greater sense of community.  Coming together is what co-ops are all about.  As a VLA, the sense of purpose and identity can be enhanced.

Wider range of resources.  As a VLA, your co-op has access to resources otherwise not available such as resources for: Adolescent Literacy, Advanced Placement, Credit Recovery, English Language Learners,  Exceptional Learners, Middle to High School Transition, and Remediation.  Global Student Network offers 400+ courses including unique electives like forensic science and digital photography.

Global Student Network makes becoming a VLA simple.

Many families homeschool because traditional “school” was not academically adequate or was opposed to their families’ values.  Forming a VLA allows you to benefit from what a school might offer (resources, structure, sense of community), but it is a “school” you create.  You can meet as often as you choose, where you choose, and involve whomever you choose.  It’s like having your cake and eating it too – like supercharging your homeschool co-op!
